APR 2018: The Power of Full Engagement

APRIL 2018

Our book of the month for April is The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to Performance and Personal Renewal.

I really enjoyed this book and am so excited to share it with you! I loved the stories/case studies throughout the book. It is so easy to see parts and pieces of ourselves in stories. Even though the cast studies are taken from the work the authors do as corporate coaches, I believe this content applies to all of us- especially WOMEN with the many hats we wear every day. The key to this book is choosing one or two insights and putting them into ACTION. Please share what insights you're having and what actions you're inspired to take in the fb group!

We live in digital time. Our pace is rushed, rapid-fire, and relentless. Facing crushing workloads, we try to cram as much as possible into every day. We're wired up, but we're melting down. Time management is no longer a viable solution. As bestselling authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz demonstrate in this groundbreaking book, managing energy, not time, is the key to enduring high performance as well as to health, happiness, and life balance.
The number of hours in a day is fixed, but the quantity and quality of energy available to us is not. This fundamental insight has the power to revolutionize the way you live your life. The Power of Full Engagement is a highly practical, scientifically based approach to managing your energy more skillfully both on and off the job.
At the heart of the program is the Corporate Athlete® Training System. It is grounded in twenty-five years of work with some of the world's greatest athletes to help them perform more effectively under brutal competitive pressures. Clients have included Jim Courier, Monica Seles, and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in tennis; Mark O'Meara and Ernie Els in golf; Eric Lindros and Mike Richter in hockey; Nick Anderson and Grant Hill in basketball; and gold medalist Dan Jansen in speed skating.
During the past decade, dozens of Fortune 500 companies have paid thousands of dollars to learn the Corporate Athlete training system. So have FBI swat teams, critical care physicians and nurses, salesmen, and stay-at-home moms. The Power of Full Engagement lays out the key training principles and provides a powerful, step-by-step program that will help you to:
• Mobilize four key sources of energy
• Balance energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal
• Expand capacity in the same systematic way that elite athletes do
• Create highly specific, positive energy management rituals
Above all, this book provides a life-changing road map to becoming more fully engaged on and off the job, meaning physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused, and spiritually aligned.

MARCH 2018: The Top Five Regrets of the Dying

MARCH 2018

Our book this month is The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing by Bronnie Ware.

A courageous, life-changing memoir that teaches us to apply the lessons learned by those nearing their death to our own life.

After too many years of unfulfilling work, Bronnie Ware began searching for a job with meaning. Despite having no formal qualifications or experience, she found herself working in palliative care.

During the time she spent tending to the needs of those who were dying, Bronnie's life was transformed. Later, she wrote an Internet blog post about the most common regrets that the people she had cared for had expressed to her. The post, also called 'The Top Five Regrets of the Dying', gained so much momentum that it was viewed by more than three million people worldwide in its first year. At the request of many, Bronnie now shares her personal story.

Bronnie has had a colourful and diverse life. By applying the lessons of those nearing their death to her own life, she developed an understanding that it is possible for everyone, if they make conscious choices, to die with peace of mind. In this heartfelt retelling, Bronnie expresses the significance of these regrets. She explains how we can address these issues positively now, while we still have the time.

The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing gives hope for a better world. Bronnie's delightful memoir is a courageous, life-changing book that will leave you feeling more compassionate and inspired to live the life you are truly here to live.

FEB 2018: Come As You Are

FEBRUARY 2018

Our book this month is Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski Phd.

An essential exploration of women's sexuality that will radically transform your sex life into one filled with confidence and joy. After all the books that have been written about sex, all the blogs and TV shows and radio Q&As, how can it be that we all still have so many questions? The frustrating reality is that we've been lied to - not deliberately, it's no one's fault, but still. We were told the wrong story. Come As You Are reveals the true story behind female sexuality, uncovering the little-known science of what makes us tick and, more importantly, how and why. Sex educator Dr Emily Nagoski debunks the common sexual myths that are making women (and some men!) feel inadequate between the sheets. Underlying almost all of the questions we still have about sex is the common worry- 'Am I normal?' This book answers with a resounding yes! We are all different, but we are all normal - and once we learn this, we can create for ourselves better sex and more profound pleasure than we ever thought possible.

An essential exploration of why and how women's sexuality works - based on groundbreaking research and brain science - that will radically transform your sex life into one filled with confidence and joy.

Researchers have spent the last decade trying to develop a "pink pill" for women to function like Viagra does for men. So where is it? Well, for reasons this book makes crystal clear, that pill will never exist - but as a result of the research that's gone into it, scientists in the last few years have learned more about how women's sexuality works than we ever thought possible, and Come as You Are explains it all....

JAN 2018: The Willpower Instinct

JANUARY 2018

Our book this month is the Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and How You Can Get More Of It, by Kelly McGonigal PhD.

Based on Stanford University psychologist Kelly McGonigal's wildly popular course "The Science of Willpower," The Willpower Instinct is the first book to explain the new science of self-control and how it can be harnessed to improve our health, happiness, and productivity.

Informed by the latest research and combining cutting-edge insights from psychology, economics, neuroscience, and medicine, The Willpower Instinct explains exactly what willpower is, how it works, and why it matters. For example, readers will learn:

  • Willpower is a mind-body response, not a virtue. It is a biological function that can be improved through mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
  • Willpower is not an unlimited resource. Too much self-control can actually be bad for your health.
  • Temptation and stress hijack the brain's systems of self-control, but the brain can be trained for greater willpower
  • Guilt and shame over your setbacks lead to giving in again, but self-forgiveness and self-compassion boost self-control.
  • Giving up control is sometimes the only way to gain self-control.
  • Willpower failures are contagious—you can catch the desire to overspend or overeat from your friends—but you can also catch self-control from the right role models.

In the groundbreaking tradition of Getting Things Done, The Willpower Instinct combines life-changing prescriptive advice and complementary exercises to help readers with goals ranging from losing weight to more patient parenting, less procrastination, better health, and greater productivity at work.

Why does this book belongs in the IN{HABIT} AMAZING BOOK HALL OF FAME:

1. Stress is an unavoidable component of life. This book shows us new science-based ways of engaging with stress that are empowering rather than debilitating. Coping with stress (aka LIFE) in a healthy way sure sounds like Radical Self-Care to me!

2. The Upside of Stress explains that people who believe stress can be helpful are more likely to be in reality about their circumstances as opposed to trying to avoid or distance themselves from stress. Many of us have experienced negative consequences due to avoiding the causes of stress in our lives at one time or another. In light of this fact, we can see that facing our stressors rather than avoiding them is healthy. Maybe counterintuitively, facing our stressors can reduce our need for addictions and distractions. In this book, Dr. McGonigal gives us practical ways to activate this science in facing our stress.

3. Dr. McGonigal explains the scientific findings on the power of MINDSET in this book! This is one of the most inspiring and exciting research she shares, I think, because it can so easily be activated and applied in our lives!

There are many more wonderful tidbits in this book and I will dive into them in the Book of the Month Facebook Live Book Club Chat on Thursday, November 30th @ 10am PST!
